Theatre

The Theatre Group is a very active group which has been successfully established for a number of years. The actual nature of the group enables us to accommodate as many members as wish to join. So, if you would like to join this happy crowd, please let us know.

On enrolment, you will be given a programme of future matinee performances. We have to book the seats a long way ahead and pay for the tickets two months in advance of each show. A reply slip for each show will be given to you and you return the slips to us at the appropriate time with your cheque.

We usually book one performance a month, but we do have a break over the Christmas period.

Theatre Days which take place at Salisbury Theatre are particularly popular. The day is divided into two parts and you are free to attend both or just one of the sessions. The morning session starts at 11.30 am and ends at 1pm. It is an informal group with no allocated seats and we meet in the main theatre. It gives the audience a chance to meet the Director, the cast and some members of the production team. Discussions take place as to the history of the play, the set design, the reasons for the director making certain decisions, etc. The audience is encouraged to participate, which makes for an interesting, and often amusing, morning.

The second part of the day is the matinee performance which starts at 2.30 pm.

April 2011 Update: Another successful season is coming to an end. In January, we enjoyed a light-hearted “Celebration of the Music of Rodgers and Hart” performed by a gifted quartet in the intimate Salberg Studio. Following that, we have seen two very contrasting plays – “The Constant Wife” by W Somerset Maugham and “A Game of Love and Chance” by Pierre Marivaux. Both studies in relationships, they couldn’t have been more different in content and style - the first a light comedy, the second a French farce! But they were both up to the excellent standard we have come to expect at Salisbury and both were performed on breath-taking sets. In May, we shall be going to see “The Country” by Martin Crimp, a psychological thriller, again in the Salberg Studio. In March, we had a day’s outing to Stratford-upon-Avon to see “Romeo & Juliet” at the newly refurbished RSC Theatre. A stunning performance in the new “theatre in the round”, a very impressive building. Our enjoyment was enhanced by its being a beautiful warm day. Stratford looked its best in the Spring sunshine with the lovely weeping willows along the banks of the Avon where people were gently rowing up and down, watched by groups of picnic-ers. It was too early in the year for it to be teeming with tourists and we were able to wander about with ease. We are already thinking about next year! Salisbury Playhouse has no long-running plays during the summer but we are thinking of experimenting with an outdoor performance somewhere local and will keep you informed. As soon as Salisbury publishes its next season’s plays, we will contact everybody.

We welcome new members as this is a Group where there is no limit to its numbers. For contact details, see box. We do not provide transport but a number of our members are happy to offer others a lift
