The U3a name indicates that, after the “first age” of childhood and full time education, and the “second age” of work and raising a family, there comes a “third age” of retirement when people are free to get together to follow interests for which they previously may not have had time. The U3A represents a coming together of such “third agers” in order to enjoy the new opportunities offered to them.

There are now over 600 groups in the UK with a total membership approaching 200,000. The BLANDFORD group provides over 200 of those.

No entry qualifications are required, no certificates or diplomas are sought or awarded, and there are no examinations.

In U3A there is no distinction between those who learn and those who teach. Group leaders and tutors are themselves members, and are often students in other groups. The main aim of U3A is to advance the education of retired people and assist them to pursue their interests within a social environment, run by members for members.

Members receive the U3A News from National Office four times a year, and locally we produce our own quarterly newsletter to which all members are invited to contribute.

There are quarterly meetings to bring all members together, as well as two monthly coffee mornings, one in the Crown Hotel and the other in the Wheatsheaf Inn. There are also annual Christmas and Summer social gatherings.
